Many products labeled “green” or low VOC misrepresent themselves in advertising. At Objective Art & Design we have researched finishing materials through many different information sources to verify the true toxic/nontoxic properties of every product we work with or recommend to our clients. Interior pollution from toxic high levels of “VOC’s” (volatile organic compounds) have been well documented as the potential cause of a multitude of health problems. With no standardization in product labeling, manufacturers can often create misleading labeling or advertising. Compounding the issue, government testing technology is not designed to detect true VOC levels in products, therefore materials that pass certain standards may be labeled low or even zero VOC content when they indeed are not. VOC exposures are only one potentially toxic element in finishing materials, many interior and exterior finishing products contain fungicides and pesticides which are not technically considered to be off-gassing and therefore are allowable on products containing the low or zero VOC labeling.
